I made a cake for a going-away party at work.  Am I crazy, or was it possible to frost an 8" layer cake with one container of frosting in the past?  Giant Eagle is open 24/7, thank goodness.

Pictures of my masterpiece:

Note my excellent decorating skillz (thank you, Alton Brown)!

I am sure I never used more than one container of frosting before...they must have thought the funfetti would make up for the shortfall:

So I'm taking the rest of the icing to work, in case I need to do any touch-up work.  Not like anyone would notice...  :)

And, the final product:

In other cooking news, on Tuesday I made [livejournal.com profile] slytherincess' Chicken Spaghetti, which was excellent.  Even Honeybunch liked it, and he hates any chicken that isn't smothered in hot sauce or deep-fried (preferably both)!  Yay!

In other, completely unrelated news, would anyone be available on next Tuesday for a down and dirty beta for my [livejournal.com profile] smutty_claus fic?  I can't believe I'm actually done before the due date, and it'll be ready for beta once I get the spag kinks out (the other kinks, they stay).

Considering how they've slowly been shrinking everything else I can think of, it probably did used to be possible to frost that entire cake with one thing of frosting.

The cake looks great!

I could possibly do the beta for you, but it depends on how long I'd have to do it -- if you need it back in less than 24 hours, I probably can't because of time differences. But I'd love to read it :D

Thanks! Amazing what you can do with pre-made foodstuffs. :D

If I can get the fic to you middle of the day (your time) Monday, could you...? But don't feel like you have to if you're going to be under a time crunch.

As long as I have one of my nights to do it, I can do it :-)

That cake looks GREAT! I've never actually made a layer cake. I have a feeling it would end in disaster.

It's not hard! I actually like to make cakes from scratch - they are SO much better than the mixes (fluffier, too).

You just have to remember the all-important rules:

Sift dry ingredients (=floofy cake)
Don't overmix
Wait until it's cool to frost
Put all frosting on top first, then ice from the middle
Share!

Doesn't Amy have a cake recipe in her book you could try? Cupcakes!

I just got my mother's lovely white KitchenAid mixer, so I think I'm almost ready to try a cake. I'd probably make from scratch as I like to torture myself like that. ;) I will keep your rules in mind.

I don't have Amy's book yet. My mother's getting it for me for Christmas so I have to WAIT!

EASY. You take a butter knife, touch a flat side to the frosting and pull. Spikes, and no runny decorating icing. ;)
