Aug. 3rd, 2004 02:20 amOkay, I finally broke down and saw Fahrenheit 9/11 today.
I have to say this film was a moving one, but it really didn't provide me with any new or shocking information. If you read BBC News or hit the Le Monde website, even if you flip past Fox News to MSNBC or read your local paper, 99% of F 9-11 is nothing we didn't know already.
But the way MM put this together impressed me. I like MM's motivation and his view of the world, but I typically find his way of going up to people and shoving a microphone into their face annoying. The reactions his subjects have are justifiable in that situation and I liked how he let the clips and people speak a bit for themselves.
Sitting in the complete dark in that movie theatre, listening to the sounds of the WTC attack - that was powerful. Watching the blank face of the Commander-in-Chief that morning as he sat in an elementary school classroom, knowing that he knew that the country was under attack - that was powerful, but in the opposite way. Tissue #1
I could feel the frustration, anger and false bravado of the soldiers interviewed. The fact that they got powered up on music before they attacked felt like mob mentality to me. And the hooding and taunting of the prisoners made me physically ill. Yes, of course soldiers aren't trained in the art of POW humiliation and torture.
The woman in Baghdad crying and screaming to God, asking for vengance and for mercy. Tissue #2
If there is one thing I can pinpoint about my hatred for Bush, it's his unhidden contempt for the middle and lower classes in this country. He literally doesn't give a shit about 99% of the country he leads. He doesn't even bother with a semblance of fairness in how his administration is run vis the Binladen family exodus and the Halliburton contracts. The 'have-mores' are his #1 priority.
The lady who lost her husband in the WTC attacks, trying to hold her life together while the administration blocked and stalled and withheld the truths about 9/11, she was so visibly strong and hanging by a thread...Tissue #3
And of course MM heads to Flint to showcase how the average joe is being fucked over by the war machine. Strange that the Marine recruiters have a lot less luck at the suburban mall than the inner-city mall. *eyeroll*
But of course the show stealer for me was Mrs. Lipscomb. To listen to her read her son's final letter to her, full of criticism for the president and his failed war in Iraq, was wrenching, especially coming from a military family. And that woman who shot her mouth off at her near the White House - what a bitch - I'd have punched her in the face (but I have the feeling I'd be instead clutching my knees weak from grief too). Tissue #4 got a big workout.
I was glad that all I left with was a very generalized, homicidal feeling. Snuck over to PoA and turned that rage intoDan/Rupert/Matt love t00by love.
In other news, am down to 200#. Before you congratulate me, this is muscle loss, not good weight loss. ): Did do some verboten weight lifting today, nothing heavy, just enough to counteract that flabby feeling. Still can't do ab stuff, so I'm getting a bit pudgy at the middle (even tho the pudge is smaller).
Must kick wedding plans into high gear tomorrow, which means I have to give in and take a pain pill to get some sleep tonight. Am debating on seeing Napoleon Dynamite tomorrow, if I have the time, which I may if I get to sleep soon and not loll about in bed hoping for more than an hour of sleep. Or maybe I'll see Harold and Kumar go to White Castle. Movies do help kill time.

Date: 2004-08-03 04:51 am (UTC)I am very much anti-Bush, don't get me wrong, but I don't like Michael Moore. He's a showman, not a journalist. However, having said that, I do applaud him in that he's garnering some support against Bush. I just wish his methods were more solidly factual.
