It happens every year, about this time.  I don't know if it's the change in the weather, the longer, sunnier evenings that makes everything seem full of possibilities.  Hormones, most likely, some weird domestic urge unsatisfied.  But at this time of the year, when I see flowers in bloom, kids playing in the street, couples pushing strollers, the old familiar yearning erupts again.  Could we, should we...

...buy a house?

Oh, sure, you say.  Why not?  We're young, relatively flush, and settled in our jobs.  Interest rates are decent; it's a buyer's market.  Everyone should invest in a home of their own - it's only smart, financially.

To that I say - HA!  Neither Andy or I care to do yardwork, and I'm the only one in this household that can wield a hammer with anything approaching aptitude.  Our credit is only good enough to net us a crackerbox house in the suburbs, the one place I could never be content to live.  We'd be 'those people' - the ones with foot-high dandelionsgrass, three-year-old mulch overgrown with weeds, and broken tree limbs everywhere.  All home-improvement projects would stagnate, half-finished.  We are so not ready for a home of our own.

But, at this time of the year, it seems like it would be nice.

I know exactly what you mean.

I work 12 hours a day and when I am not working, I want to be out with my friends and not mowing the yard.

Having said that, I am a real estate agent and the thought of paying rent chafs me to the core. I have been thinking about buying a condo, townhouse or perhaps a patio home where the lawn maintenance is done by someone who is not named Denise.

I don't know what the market is like in your area, but that might be a viable option to keep you from wasting your money on rent, build equity and get out of gardening.

So get a condo. House but no yard. Maybe something with a nice patio so you can sit out and drink vodka tonics on a hot summer's night.

Exactly what I was going to say. Get a condo or a townhouse. I work for a bank, in mortgage lending, and I think you should get into the housing market before rates go any higher. They've been steadily rising for the past year or so and all the forecasts we hear are for continued rate increases.

This stuck me as funny cause the first thing I thought was, "Oh those neighbors" LOL But then I got to thinking what would be even funnier was that we would be "that poor old childless couple with all the cats"

I think we should move into a neighborhood together!

Hmmm, then better do your neighbors a favor and wait a while, babe. LOL. I'm ready to string mine up for leaving out Easter lights. Yes, you read that right. EASTER LIGHTS. Bunnies and carrots. Who the fuck puts up Easter lights???

The same people who thought it was a really cool idea to put up Halloween lights when companies started marketing them. Next will be Flag Day/4th of July lights because fireworks are so eeeee-vil and dangerous.
