Check this article out. I really hate all the Adkins ignorance out there, and the notion that you can't be healthy if you don't look like Brittney Murphy.

I keep seeing the carb counters pop up during commericals. If there were carbs in meat, you might feel compelled to announce it, but meat doesn't have carbs! Is this a newsflash for most people? If I thought that juice was a tool of the devil, I wouldn't drink it (I don't because it's mostly sugar and I'm diabetic, so I do appreciate the low-carb varieties). But not because carbs are bad.

CARBS ARE NOT BAD. Huge portion sizes and lack of exercise are bad.

well, as a vegetarian, all the low carb shit freaks me the fuck out. . . I won't rant about what's actually in our nation's meat supply, I'll just say that I agree with you, carbs aren't bad. Too many carbs is bad, but then, so is too much meat. It'll be interesting to see what the LONG term affects of a protein saturated diet are.

My husband actually joked that he was going to open a low carb store just to cash in on the fad. . .There'd be no shortage of products, everywhere you turn you see the low carb sign. Even on things like onion soup mix O___o I'm sure it was always low carb, only now they got something to cash in on. Might as well stamp low carb on there because the sheep will buy it if it says that.

C2. . . Please tell me people don't think they are being healthy by drinking that. I mean, I like coke as much as the next gal, but I know any soda (Diet, low carb, whatever) is bad for me. I'd be far better served drinking water. LOL, maybe they'll start putting low carb stamps on the evian bottles.

(((hugs)))

Long term effects of Adkins? Kidney failure brought on by long-term ketoacidosis (by-products of protein synthesis). There's a reason that the human body is designed to utilize mostly carbs, and when you enforce false chemistry on it, it can only take so much before it breaks down.

The labels are the most annoying thing for me - you're right, I expect to see the 'Adkins-approved' label on water any day now! And when I see it on things that have never had carbs, I think 'do people not know the difference between protein, fat, and carbs?' They'll buy anything with that red A.

But then again, I've had to explain to people that sugar and starch are the same thing once you eat them.

C2 *laughs* If you want low-carb, why not just drink Diet Coke?! People are going to buy that stuff thinking it's good for them! (And I noticed that McDonald's has a new 'healthy' Fiesta salad - with ground beef, no less - but they are careful not to mention the words 'low-carb' or 'low-fat' or 'low-calorie')

Johnny should open a low-carb store - he can sell things like dry onion soup mix for twice what it normally costs and make tons of money! He'd make money hand over fist! LOL

I read Fast Food Nation this year and I've cut out about 90% of my fast-food and ground beef consumption. I mean I always knew how bad it was, but until it's really spelled out for you in terms of 'you eat this stuff!' it isn't real.

*hugs you*

both my parents are on the atkins diet, but theyre not like diehard and.. they do eat carbs sometimes :P just not a lot.

i LOVE carbs, breads are some of my favorite foods. I could never do it :P but theyve actually been eating quite well even on the diet, and they have lost weight too. They eat a lot of fish. and they take breaks. last weekend we all had shitloads of pizza and carb-tastic foods. mm.... garlic rolls.
so yeah, I guess some people can do the atkins thing and not be annoying about it

i dont know what my point is :P just felt like sharing my parents eating habits hahaha

My dad does a modified Atkins diet too. He takes days off and doesn't stress too much about grams of carbs per day.

Unfortunately, he does not concentrate on the 'good carbs' and doesn't get enough fiber. :(

Your parents are doing it the right way - the ultimate goal of Atkins is to learn to eat sensibly, eat fish and high-fiber carbs and vegetables instead of relying on simple sugars to get you through the day.

It's the people who brag on how they *never* eat carbs and insinuate that carb-eaters are some lower form of life that annoy me. And that those folks can't read a nutrition label to save their lives, obviously.

I could never do Atkins - I am addicted to cereal! :P

Carbs are delicious! I work in an office of rather heavy people and they always ask me if I do low-carb and it makes me want to lose my damn mind. I don't think they can get that I just watch what I eat and hit the treadmill a few times a week.

See, it's not the low-carb that makes you lose weight! That's such a huge myth to Atkins. It's the modification - most people actually eat fewer calories at the start of the diet - that takes off the pounds initially.

But who wants to hear that smaller portions and exercise are the only ways to ensure long-term weight loss?!

I'm about 20 pounds overweight (from the maximum for my height) but I'm in darn good shape. If people would only do 20 minutes a day of treadmill work, they would feel so much better!

If I hear one more thing about Atkins, I'm going to scream! I don't mind people doing crazy diets, but when it starts to effect *my* quality of life...then I get crazy! One of my favorite restaurants pulled my favorite appetizer off the menu...potato skins...to make way for some shitty low carb stuff. Grrrrrrrr....

I too, cannot wait to hear what the results of low carb/high protein will be long term.

There are 3 words that work wonders: Portion Control. Exercise.

OMG so true. I hate going to restaurants where practically everything on the menu is "Atkins-approved'. As if I give a shit about carb-counting when I'm out to eat.

Although, I have to admit some of the stuff has made my life easier with diabetes. Low-carb juice - I can drink apple juice again! And more side dishes to choose from - I can have potato skins and then have spinach with dinner. It's kinda nice in that way.

But I am not on board with low-carb/reduced carb bread (WTF?) or taking things off the menu to sub Atkins crap. C2? Dude, gross.

Actually, I have a membership to Victory Fitness - a early wedding present from my dad last year.

I've done circuit training though, and it rocks! It's a really, really good workout. I kinda wish I'd done Curves for the first year - I think I'd be more toned and less overdeveloped that way.

I did circuit training for a number of months and enjoyed it. Just didn't keep it up as I had too much on my plate already.

Lord I know. I could rant about that forever. Point is it has it's uses... ie... if you need to loose a ridiculous amount of weight before some sort of surgery or you might die. That's... that's about it... and they call that the mayo clinic diet anyhow, but it's the same thing. I'm not going to freakout, or I'll be typing all night. I agree. I'll leave it at that. And drink water. Lots of water. I just got back from a 4 mile run so I'm feeling good.

It's strange how the simple, common sense things we've always been told are the things that actually WORK.

Portion control...exercise...water...balanced diet...

Sure, it has its uses. It's a great thing if you want to wean yourself from simple carbs and come back to eating more fiber. I may work on lowering carbs once I'm completely healed (I'm the queen of simple carbs at the moment, since they are easily digested), but I'll not be under 30 grams a day by any means.

I'm certainly more worried about kidney failure than looking marginally better physically!

I know! And another thing that makes me crazy is the constant "Too much of ... is bad for you" then a few days later "No it's good for you! Eat tons of it!" "Wait! Wrong again, it causes brain damage! Stay away!!"

Truely, yes, too much of ANY ONE THING is bad for you... hell even water. I know there were BMTer's who died of water intoxication at boot camp for drinking TOO much WATER...

Like you say, balance is key.

Yerp.

My Mom was a diabetic. I have all of our diabetic cookbooks and stuff around the house.

When I cook healthy, I use them or I use recipes from Cooking Light Magazine. Sometimes we have an entire pint of high fat ice cream after dinner. Each. This is not a nightly occurance. But neither is having a salad as a main course.

It's called balance and enjoying life.

It sucks to be diabetic. My heart goes out to you.

One of my biggest fears in life is becoming diabetic.

The other fear I have is becoming a person who has no joy in their life because of their fears.

Balance.
