Ten things I dislike about the fandom:

1. Rabid shippers of all shapes and forms. You know the ones, where their entire fandom (and sometimes real life) identity is caught up in rooting for one ship over another. Folks who think that what pairings you ship indicate the kind of person you are, or resent the fact that I am not 100% behind 'their' ship. Get over yourselves.

2. The concept of the BNF. Name-dropping is the most annoying thing about the fandom. I don't care who you know. I friend whomever I want, and I don't particularly care who you friend/are friends with.

3. Fluffy fics. The ones where Draco turns into a cream puff after one look at Ginny and he then befriends Ron and Harry and apologizes to Hermione for calling her a Mudblood and they all live happily ever after. Or Harry and Ginny have sex and she gets pregnant and writes to her baby in her diary while at Hogwarts and decides that she won't tell Harry about the baby but he finds out anyway and he happily puts aside all of his future plans to marry Ginny and they all live happily ever after. *barfs* Worse, non-con fics where the victim falls in love with his/her attacker. *dry heaves* I don't think this is an unpopular opinion - don't we all hate fics where the characters are taken to the hinterlands of characterization with no explanation of how they came to be - but anyone who thinks that kink/non-con/BDSM is worse, it's not.

4. I'm not a big fan of either Remus or Sirius unless you can give me good backstory. I dislike Remus/Sirius slash. So sue me.

5. Same with Harry/Draco. The hordes of screaming H/D fangirls scare me.

6. Pretty much anything that has to do with Gryffindor Tower.net and its festering wank. The former members who have come to Checkmated - we tend to be Harry/Ginny friendly - are a surprisingly level-headed and open bunch. Thank goodness for that.

7. Draco will never be redeemed in canon. He's Harry's foil. His static characterization is set. Get over it. I love a good fanon redemption, but really, it ain't happening.

8. People who shout 'Ew, het/slash/teacher-student/cross-gen/incest/twincest!" DON'T READ IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, you fecking morons. Ditto for people who read my vanilla stuff and ignore the warnings on my other fics.

9. Underage plebes who cheat their way into adult areas. Get a life, you can find much more accessible (and with better pictures) porn without jeopardizing great fansites.

10. Ron-bashing. Harry and Hermione deserve each other at this point. Ron is too good of a guy.

PBG, did I ever tell you how much I appreciate you candor? Well, I do, and I know there are a few more people out here who do...

Well, except for the part of Draco being redeemed. I think he will be by book 7.

I think the majority of people at CM are level headed and friendly ... it's a nice atmosphere and I'm happy about that.

Um, um ... you don't think I'm a scary screaming H/D fangirl, do you? *wibbles* H/D is the great and t00by loff and you must feel it ... BWAH. (I'm kidding. :D)

I actually didn't like R/S slash until OOTP came out and it seemed obvious to me they were getting it on. But personally, I could care less what other people like and dislike so I promise not to sue you. :D

I don't get the BNF thing realy either. I don't know if you saw it but after the [livejournal.com profile] hp_california gathering at Disneyland a few of us name dropped like crazy as a play on that whole thing. We were joking but unfortunately some people thought we were serious. *shrugs* Whatever. I like you for who you are, not who ya know. :)

No, you're certainly not a screaming H/D fangirl! The contingent who are disappointed that there was such little interaction between Draco and Harry in OotP and HOW ARE THEY GOING TO SHAG IF THEY NEVER TALK and all that rot - those are the screaming fangirls I speak of. Of course, Harry and Draco are skipping their practice OWLs in favor of shagging in the room of requirement. :P You certainly don't have to defend your preferences to me.

I am one of those people who, when they DO read H/D, read it for the hot boysex. Bad Donna.

I don't mind Remus/Sirius all that much, it's just not my thing. The potential and actual fluff is terrifying for someone of my sensibilities. :)

Erm...guilty. I'm a little bit new to the fandom and have been trying to expand my circle o friends with people who interest me by lurking (a lot)...hope I didn't annoy you. *cringe*

I'm impressed that you posted this. Well-said.

No, no. I'm happy to know you! :) My annoyance is more toward people who mention, 'oh, so and so said this, and BNF X said that,' like this is supposed to change my opinion of either the speaker or the topic itself. Gag.

You and I have had the "shipping" discussions before, right? Seriously, JK can write whatever ships she wants and I could honestly give a flying fuck. I write what I want and I read what I want.

And I HATE Ron bashing. HATE IT!!!! (although I admit I dig S/R, but H/D only in fanon.)

Word. You're getting the 'Cletus' icon for this post.

"Harry and Ginny have sex and she gets pregnant and writes to her baby in her diary while at Hogwarts and decides that she won't tell Harry about the baby but he finds out anyway"

Ahh the ever popular in the Romance genre "Secret Baby" hook. I honestly don't understand the appeal of women running off with the baby and then one day telling the guy about it and he just loves the idea and they get married. But it's HUGE in the Romance genre. Many books have been written with that plot.

Maybe some fanfic authors would do well to just write romance novels, eh? Get paid and all for the same tired plots.

*Hugs Donna*

First of all, I must say I do like your list and am glad that Harry/Draco doesn't rock your socks either. Its really a ship that I can take or leave.

But, more importantly, I must wish you a belated Happy Birthday. I'm sorry that its late, Donna, but trust me that the wishes are just as heartfelt.

Hope it was wonderous!
