Today was one of those not-so-good days. Was in meetings all morning, had to deal with a pissed-off employee (who applied for a full-time position and we chose another employee over him), and I am now timing one of my shelvers to write up an evaluation to address her issues.
by our HR person for recommending that this particular shelver not be given a new schedule. My employee consistently only takes 1 and a half shelves of books (half of the cart capacity) and it takes her the same amount of time as the other shelvers who take their three shelves out. Her current schedule was adjusted in September because she felt she was working too late (12-4), so we moved her start time back an hour. She was late the first day. Staff in the reference area have caught her putting books that don't fit on reshelving carts downstairs (convieniently leaving the task of shifting and shelving in crowded areas to the reference staff). Recently she has been calling off at the last moment (i.e. an hour before her shift begins) for non-emergency doctor's appointments and doctor visits for her father. Twice she has blatantly ignored the two-week vacation request rule and requested time off within a day or two of the time she wants off. She does not offer to come in and work part of her shift or trade time with another person. She does not call when she is late, but strolls in 15-20 minutes tardy, and claims that she was on her way, and couldn't call (she does have a cellular phone).
I can't have someone like this as an opening shelver. I need someone who will be loading a full cart at 9am and working diligently the entire time. This position will not work for a person who doesn't show up every day. She's been here three years, and her performance has been getting worse rather than better.
But she's going to be given that time slot anyway. Why? She's an Egyptian woman over the age of 40. So I have to reward her for her tardiness, her absenteeism, and her slipping work ethic. I am a tough disciplinarian, and I've cracked down on several staff who are not holding their own. We've fired two people in the department so far for the very same infractions. I am 100% behind affirmative action, which is why this situation irritates the absolute hell out of me. For the 99 people who work their rear ends off to make the grade, there's one person who toes the line and knows that they can get away with not meeting their job requirements by playing the race card. I'm lucky; I pass completely except for being female, but I still resent the heck out of anyone who gives conservatives fuel to turn back the clock on civil rights.
Okay, rant over. Flame me at will.
Missed
archchancellor's phone call during all this kerfluffling :'-( He left a voice mail, and has the cutest British accent! I shall be waiting tomorrow for the call, Arch dear.
Thought we would become another drunk driving statistic coming home from northeastern Ohio on Sunday. We stopped at a rest area an hour south of Cleveland and I swear that half of the folks there were completely hammered from the Browns game. We drove home in heavy, weaving traffic - I know I was white-knuckling it most of the way. Eek.
Ah, and lest I forget, the Boudoir's resident Centaur has written his first ficlet! It's written from a male perspective, of course. I challenge you to join and read it for yourself!

Grrr...
Date: 2003-10-22 06:35 am (UTC)What flames? Among other things, it's crap like this that got Dubya that a slot in the White House and unfortunately, it is what will keep him there. It's the parts of the system that leave no room for common sense or allowing the local people in charge to use their own judgement in these matters.
It's too bad people in the not so distant past had to screw things up so badly for us, isn't it?
Ugh. We feds give dollars. We feds make 'um great amounts of rules you must follow. No room to move for you. We feds pull dollars. Ugh. Budget crunch. Ugh.
That's the stuff that people who can't intellectualize details latch onto. Then they listen to Rush or what ever Southern Crispie preacher who wishes to rant at the moment.
*PING*
Conservative gives them an idea of how to solve problem by hating the race rather than the part of the system that broke down.
It's essential for a politician whose campaign and good graces exist primarily to stir hatred and divisivness. In other words - All of them.
I just hope that you can document all of the garbage and either get her to find her work ethic or get rid of her. Doesn't matter if she's Egyptian or Russian or a freaking Zorknoid. She's here and she's American and working in a damn Library. She needs to get over herself.
Don't get me going too. (worked for the state of NY for faaarrrrrr too long...)
Yer lucky...
Date: 2003-10-22 06:42 am (UTC)I watch Springer faithfully because I just know that they will show up on there someday. I am just glad that they don't do the whole phone thing.
Springer: And on the phone we have your cousin Bloodee Maree! You say she's a stuck up bitch who refuses to talk to anyone because she thinks she's better than all of you?
*audience begins chanting, "Stuck up bitch! Bark like a dog!!"*
**bloodee dies of embarrassment**
Re: Yer lucky...
Date: 2003-10-23 01:18 am (UTC)Besides that, Springer doesn't give a good representation of America. Most people have to common sense to keep that stuff buried good and deep where it belongs, unless there are oodles of paparazzi to dig it up or something.
Balcony, eh?
