I'm slowly but surely recovering from the past two weeks (waking up at 5am and being out of the house every day until 9pm should be against the law).

Lately I've been dealing with being tired, like TIRED tired, physically. Figuring I needed a 100% rest day (a typical rest day for me is a 3-mile lunch run) or two, I did that. MORE TIRED. Low-grade headaches. MEH. Cold all the time (to which several people can attest), no matter how warm the room is (my office is a balmy 79* right now, and I'm feeling a bit chilled). BLAH. I've had a ultrasound on my legs to figure out why they twitch so darned much (I don't have RLS). OW.

When I mentioned the cold thing to my sister, she said, "Oh, you're iron deficient." O_______o Wut.

Luckily, I track my daily food intake on www.sparkpeople.com (Join up! It's free! Tell them purebloodgryff referred you!) and lo and behold, I've barely made 50% of my recommended daily intake of iron per day.  Ever.  Oops.

Pair that with my lack of a duodenum (which is where most iron is absorbed per wikipedia, the only source for science on the intarwebs), and yeah. Okay.

I made a nice bit of liver and had some broccoli for dinner last night.  Hopefully I can work in some placebo effect too, and get this tiredness under control - I ain't got time (or the iron) to bleed.

In other news, my SC gift fic has been posted, but I can't read it until tonight.  Boo.

So how can you absorb more iron?

This wouldn't have anything to do with your diabetes, do you think?

You can absorb small amounts in other parts of the intestine, but about 90% is taken in by the duodenal tissues. It doesn't really have anything to do with diabetes, AFAIK. Everything has been pretty peachy on that score.

I'll be seeing the doctor in mid-January to ask about these things!

I refuse to go back to sparkpeople until they update their interface. XO

I've switched to livestrong (formerly the daily plate) but they won't do the vitamins and minerals the way sparkpeople does unless you pay them.

Ah well...
