It's time for a poll!
Jul. 8th, 2008 08:24 pm(Note: if you've responded to this on
zorb's,
abigail89's or Penny's journal, you don't need to respond here.)
Anyway, we will be presenting in a panel this week at Portus (www.portus2008.org), a discussion of the fandom history of the H/Hr ship. I didn't do this as an "official" LJ poll; nice, long answers might be required for some of the questions. :)
So, please, answer the questions below. Some, any or all of them, depending on your preference.
1. Whether you are still involved in fandom or not, is (or was) H/H your primary ship of preference or was it a secondary ship or one of many ships you could support?
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
b. If so, why not?
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?

Date: 2008-07-09 12:44 am (UTC)1. Whether you are still involved in fandom or not, is (or was) H/H your primary ship of preference or was it a secondary ship or one of many ships you could support?
H/Hr is my primary ship of preference. I have a few secondary ships, but I will not ship Harry or Hermione with anyone else.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
In a small way. Nowhere near as active as I used to be. Partly it's because the series is over, but a great deal is how poorly I felt the series ended. Now I stay in my little corner of H/Hr fandom.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
I have not. This may be in part because I have never read the last book (other than a few H/Hr scenes quoted online) after seeing that epilogue. Essentially the canon stops at book 5 for me and I indulge in fanfic instead.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
While I didn't leave the fandom 100%, B, C and D are primary reasons I'm not as deeply involved as I was.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I believe it's decreased somewhat, possibly (I don't go looking), but there seems to be a certain set of fans who refuse to leave H/Hr fans alone and will take any opportunity to try and stir up hard feelings.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I read H/Hr fic of different viewpoints. When I write fanfic, I ignore most of books 6-7, the epilogue and interview information every time.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both.

Date: 2008-07-09 12:58 am (UTC)2. Sortof. I went to both Nimbus and Lumos (in Vegas). I would go to Portus but I start a theatre thing on Thursday.
a/b. I drifted out of most of it. I also stopped having time for meetups, which was the primary way I was involved with fandom. I wrote fanfic several years ago (when I was in my early teens lol!), but that did not last for more than a year. I occasionally read fanfic, and draw fanart, but it is much less often than it used to be.
3. After a couple of years in fandom, I started to go to meetups. I started having more fun discussion about things with people. For several years, I was involved with a fantastic Hogwarts type school called HOL (Hogwarts Online). It is still going on today! I stopped having time for that, which also coincided with when I could not go to meetups as often.
I really like the social aspect of fandom. That has kept me in it longer, definitely. I like just having normal conversation with my fellow H/Hr shippers, as well as squeeing gleeful conversation.
4. N/A
5. I think it has decreased in the past year. I think that part of fandom felt bad for us, since we were hard core shot down canon wise after DH. Also, I think that now that we have more canon evidence that blatently points to a R/Hr outcome, there is less venomous debate to be had. :) If anything, the negativity shifted from the paring itself to individual fandom wank.
6. I read H/Hr still. Haha most often porn, as it tends to be a short story that requires not a lot of time commitment. I LOVE post-Hogwarts H/Hr. It makes me happy and makes more sense than a romance that blossomed with kisses and what not during the books.
I don't mind ignoring the recent canon... The IoD was insulting, to be honest. I don't care if I overreacted at the time, but honestly, even my hardcore R/Hr shipper friends felt bad for us, that what was sad was truly mean. I haven't read any fic that included the recent canon, to be honest. It sounds sticky and hard to do.
7. Of course! I love H/Hr together. R/Hr fight too much. Fighting is not a healthy relationship. I like the H/Hr dynamic- they bring out good qualities in each other. I also really like the H/Hr community. :)

Date: 2008-07-09 01:24 am (UTC)1. Whether you are still involved in fandom or not, is (or was) H/H your primary ship of preference or was it a secondary ship or one of many ships you could support?
Primary. It became one of many as I branched out into fandom, but it is first and foremost. Always will be.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
Not as actively as I was in the early days, but yes I'm still involved - and will be at Portus (Yay!). Mostly my involvement with fandom is RPG/fic related and keeping up with the LJ comms. I haven't been an active fic writer in a while though.
And I still have a stuffed Badger in my cube, my license plate still reads "MUGGLBRN", and I have an HP quilt in my office.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
I did gravitate to other ships (Harry/Ron is my other one), because I do love me some goooood best mate slash. I have a few slash ships, but for Het ones? I tend to prefer H/Hr to this day and rarely read or write any other het pairing...tho I do enjoy Trio fics *quite* a bit. :D
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
N/A
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
From my own observations, I think the stigma still stands from the whole post-HBP nightmare, but it's lessening. I think the lack of any of the bollocks that happened after HBP from the H/Hr's after DH really helped to keep that from getting stirred up again.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
Unfortunately I haven't been able to write fic much for the last year or so - I blame RPGs for stealing my writing muse. But when I do write it, it's EWE. (Except for the post-epilogue epilogue I wrote shortly after DH came out). So apart from that, I ignore the epilogue. I also ignore anything she says in interviews (especially the IOD -that one still boils my blood), because my canon is the books. Not the constantly changing (and often contradictory) things she says in interviews. As for what I read, as long as it's a well-crafted and believable story (and a lovely H/H), I'm not fussed about the standpoint from which it's written.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both. Always. And I still go into spasms of squee over ever H/H moment in the movies and the books. Nearly seven years now - I don't see that changing.

Date: 2008-07-09 01:24 am (UTC)2. I'm not really involved with HP anymore, though I still read fic and RPGs. Mostly, it's because I grew out of it.
3. I'm not involved with fandom that much.
4. As I said before, I grew out of fandom. I no longer needed the same escape from reality for which I used fandom. My life just changed, and I had to pay more attention to what was going on in reality. There was also an element of boredom, as I have some major attention span issues. However, the vitriol directed at Harry/Hermione shippers was not a part of my departure. In fact, I tried to present myself as the sane face of the pairing's fans--a hard stretch for someone who lost his mind years before fandom.
5. I think that the wankstorm has finally blown over, but the stigma attached to liking the pairing will remain for some time, simply because of the acrimony between shippers in the HP fandom. I honestly lay the blame at the feet of the HP4GU groups that started the original flame war, none of whom are involved in the HP fandom anymore. They created the idea that there were two "canon" factions in the first place.
6. I still read fanfic in the pairing. It's still my favorite pairing from any fandom, after all. Generally, I don't care about the era, setting, or how the author decides to deal with canon. I just ask that it be good. Of course, there is a strong tendency to ignore a good chunk of the last two books.
7. It was really about fandom for me, and yes, I still ship them there. Canon doesn't dictate my preferences. That said, I think that a lot of hatred towards JKR from our section of fandom is undeserved, and reflects a great deal of immaturity and emotional investment on the part of those throwing such insults in her direction. So she chose to take the other path and in so doing jossed our fics (and broke our hearts). This doesn't make her evil or incompetent.

Date: 2008-07-09 02:14 am (UTC)H/Hr was (and still is) my primary ship of preference.
2. Are you still involved in fandom? Somewhat, yes. I still write and read fanfiction and participate in discussion.
a. If so, why?
I have no life. Honestly, though..even though it didn't happen in canon (and thank goodness for that, although personally it would have been a better ending for the HP series IMO) I still love the ship and the people who support it with all my heart. This sounds corny, but H/Hr made me believe in true love..and in my mind, there's no need to justify that.3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why? Not really. I tend to stick to the H/Hr fandom. Although I do indulge in some miscellaneous slash every now and then.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
N/A
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I believe it has decreased in the last year. Sure, there are those few shippers who can't leave it alone, but for the most part..it's been pretty peaceful.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I do both. Usually it depends on my mood..but I tend to write H/Hr from the standpoint of pre-epilogue and epilogue-what-epilogue. Occasionally I indulge in affair!H/Hr because, hey, it's hot. :) I don't completely ignore HBP+DH+IoD .. but I do ignore some parts of DH. Needless to say.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both.

Date: 2008-07-09 02:31 am (UTC)Primary, and only, ship.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
No.
I could have handled the wank and negativity towards H/Hr if i thought HBP was well written and up to the standards of PoA, GoF, and OotP. There were so many things I disliked about the book - the H/Hr part was a very small portion of my discontent - that I completely lost interest in the series and world she created.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I have no idea. I'd like to think that it has decreased because I'm an optimist, but remembering the hatred from HBP...I wonder.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I haven't written a word of HP fan fic since the March before HBP was released. My muse was already wandering away at random times and never returned after HBP.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
If I cared about any ships in HP I would prefer H/Hr.
On a side note: the whole debacle from HBP cured me from being too involved in any fandom and getting too invested in any ship. Not only did I not like the reaction from fandom, but my own reaction disgusted me. It made me stop and think, "What the hell am I doing? Why the hell do I care?" For the wake-up call to my sanity, I'm eternally grateful.

Date: 2008-07-09 02:50 am (UTC)1. Whether you are still involved in fandom or not, is (or was) H/H your primary ship of preference or was it a secondary ship or one of many ships you could support?
H/Hr was my primary ship when I joined fandom. Now it is still at the top but D/G is probably even with it.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
I was never super "involved" in fandom. Always more of a fic reading lurker. However, I am still a fic reading lurker. My involvement has probably diminished some. I used to be a little bit involved on message boards and more involved in livejournal than I am now.
I'm still involved because I still like HP and I still enjoy exploring the fic and the possibilities of the HP world. I am less involved than I used to be mostly because of changing focus in fandom on things I'm less interested in, and the exit of some of the people I did know from fandom.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
I have probably gravitated more toward D/G than H/Hr in recent years. My focus in fandom is mostly fanfic and I feel like my pairing focus has shifted because I have a very difficult time finding good H/Hr fanfic and I don't have the same level of difficulty with other pairings.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
N/A
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I would say I think that it has probably stayed constant in the last year, but would be the first to admit that I'm not very tapped in to the pulse of the fandom. Some of this feeling probably comes from having been in fandom for a long time, and remembering a time when H/Hr was a huge ship. I took a bit of a break from fandom, so I missed some of the shift in feeling toward H/Hr, which probably makes it more jarring to me.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
In theory I would still read H/Hr fanfic, in practice I don't actually read a lot of it. As I said before I have a really hard time finding good H/Hr fic and I don't really have the time to wade through the bad to find the good. So I end up reading parings where it is a little easier to find what's good and what's bad.
I probably approach it mostly as epilogue-what-epilogue, because I don't like the restraints the epilogue puts on fic. However, I'm really just open to anything that is well written.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 03:08 am (UTC)It is absolutely my primary ship of preference for Harry and Hermione. My primary HP ship overall is likely Seamus/Dean.
2. Are you still involved in fandom? Not actively, no
b. If so, why not? I didn't really like the last two books, nor how mainstream (?) fandom reacted to them, and I lost my love for reading and writing fic for a long while because of that. (NB, my dislike wasn't about the shipping.)
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
A combo of b and d. I fell into another fandom, and I was tired of having to defend myself as a non-"harmonian" who yes, preferred to read and write H/Hr in fandom but always thought canon would be otherwise. And maybe I just never got over the "delusional" crack.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I can't tell if it's actually decreased, or I'm just less aware of it. In looking outside of fandom, so many people were so dissatisfied with the end of HP, DH and the epilog in particular, that the grousing of H/Hr fans didn't seem so odd. Also, moving outside of HP fandom gave me a lot more perspective on the way that OMHWF/SQ fans spoke about "respecting" JKR, etc. And certainly FW moving the Harmonian wank off their main page and into the "cornfield" made it much less visable to the casual viewer.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I'm actually working on a sequel now to my first novel-length fanfic. The way I've coped is in creating that fic, which was written post-GoF but set in 6th year, as its own AU, and then writing everything else within that universe. So in reality, I'm ignoring OotP, HBP and DH. (Sirius lives! I need him for stuff.) The fic I actually wrote this year for Liss's Christmas fest was vague enough that it didn't much matter, but it was still a part of that AU.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
I never shipped H/H in canon because I'm not a canon shipper as a general rule. I absolutely still ship H/H in fanon.
Just a little telling aside: I would adore it if Marta drew the graveyard scene from DH. It's the emotional high point of the book and the only scene that actually made me cry, and I think she'd do something amazing with it and besides, it's canon. But I was afraid to put it in when she asked for canon requests because I thought she'd be angry that I, a known H/hr shipper, was asking for a scene that a H/Hr shipper might cling to or point to in a non canonical way (though I will say, that should have been Ginny with him, for canon shipping purposes). So there's your chilling effect in reaction to the treatment of H/Hr shippers.
And on top of that, as I move into new fandoms and interact there I'm always leery of "outing" myself as an H/Hr shipper. I always want to say, "Please, I'm not a Harmonian!" as it seems that casual HP readers, or people who weren't in fandom but saw the wank, can be worse in their assumptions. I will probably make a giant post of explanation before I start posting the EWFS sequel just so my Idolslash friends don't think I'm a nutter.
There, I'm sure that's a lot more than you guys needed to know! Good luck with the panel and I look forward to hearing about it!

Date: 2008-07-09 03:21 am (UTC)2. Haven't been for quite a while.
b. Fannish drift, in combination with vast disappointment in the last two books, shipping aside.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
Boredom/new interests
5. I couldn't really say but when the topic of old HP OTPs comes up in conversation, I usually have to explain that no, I was a Pumpkin Pier, not a Harmonian, thank you very much.
7. I still would have preferred if the books had gone that way, but I don't really think about it that much.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 03:28 am (UTC)It was my first ship, until about book 5. I still like fanon H/Hr though.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
Not like I was. I love the books, I own the books, I love the movies, I will go see the last two movies and I will buy them, but I don't participate in fandom like I used to.
a. If so, why?
Too busy for one, but also because I get so tired of all the wank involved with participating actively in fandom.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
NA
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
B and C
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I don't know- I haven't kept up with it.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I love H/Hr fanfic, I just don't have time to read it. I like fanfic from years 6/7 at Hogwarts, to during the war, to post war.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Only in fanon.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 03:51 am (UTC)Harry/Hermione is definitely my #1 Harry Potter ship and has always been at the top of my shipping list in general.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
I am somewhat involved in the fandom. I'm mostly only connected to the Harry Potter fandom through Harry/Hermione, though. Right now, H/Hr communities are the only HP ones I am a part of.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
I have not gravitated towards any other subject or ship in the HP fandom. I do have other parts of the HP fandom that I like, but I haven't shifted focus away from H/Hr for the most part.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
N/A
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I haven't really ventured outside of the H/Hr comms too much lately. On the occasional time that I do, the H/Hr negativity has stayed constant, I think.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I read H/Hr fic fairly often. I read fic more than I write it. The types of H/Hr fic I normally read are set post-Hogwarts/post-epilogue and I'll sometimes read affair!H/Hr.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both, definitely.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 04:43 am (UTC)Harry and Hermione has always been one of my favorite ships. I also like Harry/Ginny. I can't rank one above the other as I think the it has more to do with Harry than the girls. :) I do like each paring for different reasons, though. One is a relationship based on long term friendship, and another based on unrequited love eventually reciprocated. Both situations appeal to me.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
I haven't written in a long time, but I do still read occasionally. I am more selective than I used to be.
a. If so, why?
b. If so, why not?
I think mostly because I've been very busy. Life has gotten in the way. I also don't think there as many original stories out there.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
I've gravitated toward Harry/Ginny, as I read more H/H when I first started. I read Trio fic, too. The idea of a threesome, both the physical relationship and the emotional relationship, interests me, at least in the fictional realm.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
I haven't left completely, but I did pull back due to time, new interests and some overall negativity, not just with H/Hr. It did get a bit crazy last summer, though, om both sides of the fence.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I really don't know. I pulled back from fandom when things started getting ridiculous, at least in my opinion. I rarely see posts that detail any negativity in fandom.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I only read these days and I enjoy all of these situations. It's ALL fiction anyway, right? If the plot is interesting and the writing good, I'll read it.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
I have reflected on H/Hr in cannon, but I don't necessarily think it's a canon issue. I read fanfic because it's interesting and there are some good writers. I like this pairing so that's what I read. It's Ms. Rowling's book and it was her call. Personally, I don't think romantic relationships were the focus of her books, but more something she included because it's a natural part of growing up. She puts more emphasis on friendship and other types of love such as familial. It's not something I spend a great deal of time thinking about. I just read what I like.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 04:56 am (UTC)Well, I could see it in the beginning because it sort of made sense to me (especially because Ginny wasn't exactly old enough to be considered as a romantic partner). I guess I could say that even though I got it, I wasn't that into it as a ship cause due to my age I'm more of a professor shipper. And I like boys on boys more. *G*
This probably doesn't help at all.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 05:00 am (UTC)I originally was a H/G shipper, but then saw the light after reading Paradigm of Uncertainty. H/Hr is now my OTP. My other primary ship is H/R/Hr.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
Yes. I've made friends here that I'm not willing to give up. And writing fanfic keeps me engaged, keeps me involved in the characters and works to expand my writing.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
Most of my writing is Trio, my slash is H/R and my het is H/Hr (it's all about Harry). However, I've always read just about everything and that hasn't changed.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
n/a
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I think it's decreased out of apathy. Now that there is no new canon, there's nothing to inflame people. That said, I'm sure once the Deathly Hallows movie is released, the R/Hr and H/G shippers will rag us endlessly.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I read and write H/Hr fanfic. I've read all kinds post-DH, but tend to write EWE or just AU based on a book prior to DH.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Since OotP, I haven't shipped H/hr in canon but I still ship it in fanon.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 05:02 am (UTC)H/Hr was my primary, and only, ship.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
b. If so, why not?
Nope, not at all. I was turned off by HBP because it didn't meet my expectations in terms of character development and plot (and shipping was a part of that, but a small part). The crush of disappointment stayed with me for a few days, and the Mugglenet/TLC interview with JKR confirmed that I wouldn't see any changes that would redeem the series for me in Book 7, so I've pretty much distanced myself completely from fandom since then.
I'd say not "new interests" so much as lack of interest in HP, coupled with "d".
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I can't say, as I'm so far removed from fandom at this point that I have no idea!
When I reread the earlier books, particularly OotP (which I'm doing now, actually), I still see H/Hr, but I've also read all of HP through the epilogue, so I'm not a canon shipper, I guess. But if I was going to read HP fanfic or look at art again, it'd be H/HR in nature :)

Date: 2008-07-09 05:23 am (UTC)My lack of interest in the books stems from DH in general. Over the past year I've done some reflecting and now I feel completely let down by the end of the series in general. I felt very, very cheated by it.
So, yeah. Margaret Atwood, Cormac McCarthy, Haruki Murakami, Richard Russo, Kurt Vonnegut, Mikhail Bulgakov, Christopher Moore, Ian McEwan, and more. Those are the authors I'm reading this year. Why would I need to continue to worry about a book that let me down so much a year ago? There's so much else out there to read that can give me more.
I just wish I had the same overwhelming feelings I had with Harry and the fandom. That's what makes me sad. I probably won't meet the good friends that I did when I had fandom. Shame that.

5) I don't know, but I do remember being shocked at the venom of the anti-H/Hr crowd. I've shipped "odd" parings in other fandoms, and I've never seen anything like the zealousness in HP fandom. I actually unsubscribed from a podcast due to the intolerance. It's one thing to say, "Not my cuppa tea." It's something else entirely to say, "There's not a hint of shippiness in the books or the movies, and anyone who says otherwise is stupid &/or nutty."
6) I would absolutely read H/Hr fic if I knew where to find "the good stuff." I looked for it on my own and found... um... bad fic (bad, bad fic!).
7) Both.

Date: 2008-07-09 07:17 am (UTC)2. Are you still involved in fandom? No, I grew up with Harry Potter, and the final book came at a very pivotal point in my life...the end of my first year of college. Finishing the series seemed like a logical "end" to my childhood, and once it was over...done...complete, I had no desire to go back and continue to be active in something I now saw as black and white.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving? Once I entered college I left all of my fandoms. I didn't have the time. I still consider myself of fan of Harry Potter, but I don't actively participate in anything outside of keeping it close to my heart, and my copies on the bookshelf. Now that the books are "finished" I feel that I'm finished with them as well.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year? I haven't been involved at all, and therefore have no idea how the fandom has been perceived since DH was published.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Neither, but as I am not involved in fanon anymore I can only answer for the canon side of things. I think I originally shipped H/Hr because I saw R/H as being far too obvious to be the outcome (way back around PoA). It also felt like the logical choice seeing my other ship was Draco/Ginny. As the books moved forward and it became obvious that Rowling really was going to go in the R/Hr direction I started to mentally prepare myself for disappointment, and thus started to warm up to the idea of R/Hr and H/G. By the end of DH I was at piece with these pairings, and I understood why H/Hr could never be...that friendship is even more important than romance.

Date: 2008-07-09 10:59 am (UTC)H/Hr is my primary and only ship in HP.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
Yes
a. If so, why?
Because I love reading what writers have done with H/Hr. It is a ship worth the work. :)
b. If so, why not?
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
No
Hmmm, that is a hard question. I think it has generally stayed the same. Although I have noticed an increase in H/Hr shippers even when talking about the ships in canon casually with people.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I do read a lot of H/Hr. With the reading, I will read any of those combinations especially if it is a writer I know. Although I do prefer it pre-OoTP because I really don't like what JKR did with any of the character after that.
I have ideas running around in my head writing wise for H/Hr.
It would probably be after GOF or during OoTP.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both with canon up until GOF because after that book...all the characters should have exploded and the story should have as well...there are so many problems after GOF.
I also ship fanon with stories I particularly admire. Mostly JKR pissed me off in canon with how she treated all the characters and H/Hr.

Date: 2008-07-09 01:47 pm (UTC)I had so many ships before I discovered HHr, mostly in the anime fandom, and while I do ship couples on TV, I never felt like I had to join a fandom to enjoy their pairings. However, when I got involved in HHr, it FAST became my OTP. Like I said, I have several ships, but HHr continues to be number one for me. I can't ship Harry with anyone else. I'm a bit more flexible with Hermione. I can ship other characters with each other. I can also maintain my preference of other ships in other fandoms, but HHr is a constant. I can't replace it.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
Yes, I am.
a. If so, why?
I just love the ship that much. They seemed so perfect, even if JKR didn't think so. I'd like to think that I can detach myself from HHr, but it still pisses the fuck out of me whenever I read someone say, "Harry and Hermione are like brother and sister! Blah, blah, blah!" I don't want to get into discussions like that anymore, but I still hate it when I read stuff like that.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
Well, I've never been closed to other focuses and other ships. I engage in a bit of Twilighting, and even if I don't like getting heavily involved in my TV ships (Warrick+Catherine of CSI, Chase+Cameron and House+Cuddy in House) or movie ships, I like to look them up online every once in a while. Then of course, I've always liked my anime ships, but HHr has done something to me like none of them have, in spite of the fact that I created websites for my previous OTPs Kenshin+Kaoru and Robin+Starfire.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
I didn't leave it, but if I did, it would be because of a New Interest--a new OTP. The negative tone directed at HHr always only served to galvanize me, it seemed. As in--"You fuckers think you can drive me away?" Yeah, it could get that bad.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
Stayed the same. I never understood ship-hating. I can't abide by Harry+Ginny, but I don't go and make fun of them or call them names. Too bad I can't prove that I'd be as benevolent if their ship didn't come through, but whatever. I like to leave ships alone. People are happy with their ships... why should I mar that with my hatred? I never understood why people like to put other people down in the shipping-verse. I thought it was only HHr, but I'm seeing it among the Twilighters, too. I don't want to get involved in that shit anymore, but it's like fans crave these ship wars. It's driving me nuts.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I still write HHr fanfic. I'm currently writing something I started pre-DH so I have to finish it in pre-DH mode, but I've written something post-DH with the epilogue, and I'm still planning to write another one of the sort. I don't mind writing something post-DH sans epilogue, or writing something pre-DH altogether. I don't care if it's writing or reading about an hHr affair or whatever. I'll stay in this ship until I find a new OTP.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Fanon, most definitely. I'm practical enough to know when I'm licked. I'm not delusional. :P
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 03:18 pm (UTC)H/Hr is definitely my primary ship. I have other ships I support to a much lesser extent, but H/Hr will always be my HP OTP and I will not ship either character with anyone else.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
b. If so, why not?
I am still involved in fandom to an extent, although I mainly only frequent H/Hr friendly places around the net and tend to avoid more general sites. I'm still involved because I still love H/Hr dearly, the ship means a lot to me, and I'd never be able to abandon it completely despite feeling negative about fandom on occasion.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
No I haven't. The only thing I take a solid interest in within the HP fandom is the H/Hr ship itself. I have no desire to become involved in any other area.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
Non-applicable.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I think it has probably died down a little now that the book series is over, although it will no doubt flare up to a certain extent in the run up to movie release with the OBHWF fans flaunting their canon in our faces, and I think it will always remain to a point. There's a bit of a stigma attached to shipping H/Hr and that kind of thing just doesn't go away easily.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I'm nowhere near talented enough to write, but I do enjoy reading H/Hr fanfiction when I have the time to do so. I generally either read pre-epilogue H/Hr and epilogue-what-epilogue H/Hr as a rule, although I will give other types of fic a chance if written well enough.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both. Obviously H/Hr is a fanon ship given how the series ended. but I feel we definitely still have our fair share of canon moments in the books as well.

Date: 2008-07-09 06:00 pm (UTC)2. Are you still involved in fandom? Only very small pockets of it. But then, that was always true for me. (Yahoo groups, PK, lj with friends-only, pumpkinpie.org, FA, but usually just the H/H thread.)
a. If so, why? I still enjoy reading stories at Portkey and such. However, although I leave reviews most of the time, I'm bad about other aspects of the fandom.
b. If not, why not?
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why? Nope. Although I will read Harry/Hermione/Luna and sometime including other girls as well. Dunno if you know since it's not been around long, but there's a new Yahoo group called 3_or_4_Part_Harmony for Harry/Hermione/other. It was opened on July 4 and as of now has 407 New Members and 413 messages.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
E. Fandom as a whole has generally been too big and overwhelming for me, but the contempt with which we were treated in and after the Interview of Doom made me retreat from it even more.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I don't know, honestly. Sorry, but I can't be bothered to go where I know I'm not wanted.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I read it a lot. I write it in my head, but I've never been much for sharing it. I'm not overly fond of affair!fic, but I'll read it and some of it is quite good. I love Epilogue-what-epilogue. Post-epilogue is fine too/ I also like AUs, whether that means ignoring HBP/DH/whatever Jo says next or moving them into alternate times or whatever.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both? Both.

Date: 2008-07-09 06:05 pm (UTC)Yes, H/Hr has always been my ship of preference. I do love a few other ships and enjoy many others, but H/Hr is always number one for me.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
b. If so, why not?
Yes, I am, although not as much as I was years ago. I still love the books, the ship, and the people, and I still enjoy cruising the sites, reading fanfic and looking at art. The HP fandom has been a very big, important part of my life for seven years, and I'm in no hurry to move on.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
Nope. Still like everything I always have.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom

N/A
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I'd say it's decreased, but to be honest I stayed away from all the Harmonian crap as much as I could, so I don't look for it. I haven't seen as much wank in the last year, though.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I do, although I'm not writing as much as I used to. I'll read pretty much any type of H/Hr, although I'm not mad on affair fics (that would depend on the author). I like to write mostly adult H/Hr and would probably ignore DH to eliminate dealing with a H/G marriage.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
To be honest, I never really shipped H/Hr in canon because I never thought it would happen in canon - if it had, I'd have been thrilled, but I've always loved Harry and Hermione together as adults - I've always felt that once they get together, that's it for both of them, so they'd need to be older.
Have a good time at Portus, will miss you guys! Also, D, would love to hear about the panel and how it went...

Date: 2008-07-09 06:08 pm (UTC)H/Hr was my first ship. I closed GOF and the first thing that popped into my head was "Now they'd be a cute and happy couple." There were other ships that I started to like once I started reading fanfiction, but canon-wise, H/Hr was my first. I did not like Ron. I did not like the dynamic between him and Hermione. I mean, I saw it was there but I absolutely hated it. Harry and Hermione went together like peas and carrots.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
My involvement with fandom is fairly limited. I don't attend fandom events because I live in Canada and they're nearly always held in places that are too damn hot or too far away... or during Canadian Thanksgiving in the middle of a school year right when midterms are being held. :-|
I never considered myself an active fandomer. I wrote stories and I participate in a couple of fic exchanges. I used to be a member of
I'm more or less on the fringes.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
It wasn't exactly fandom that did it, but I started playing in HP rpgs in 2003 just shortly before OOTP came out. Once that started all my notions of shipping went completely awry. H/Hr was always my "canon" ship, but I started liking minor characters much MUCH more when I started playing in RPGs. My love drifted drastically toward the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?

e. Any combination of the above
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I don't really pay attention to the ship that much in fandom. Ever since it changed its name to "Harmony" (which I loathe with the passion of a thousand burning suns) I've pretty much ignored everything they do. For me, it's Pumpkin Pie or nothing.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I write fic for exchanges only. So the fic I write tends to be ships that other people like.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Canon. Minus that epilogue. Which was just a bad piece of writing all round. And I feel confident in saying so. I spent enough time at University getting a writing degree to pass judgement. JKR is not god's gift to literature and she never will be.
I'M FILLING THIS OUT AND YOU CAN'T STOP ME. :P
Date: 2008-07-09 07:14 pm (UTC)No. But I like polls!
I've never been anti-H/Hr, though. One of the very, very few R/Hr shippers that can say that, in my experience.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
Hellz yes.
a. If so, why?
Because it's still fun. Because I can still sit and have a conversation about Harry Potter and realize two hours later that it's way past my bedtime--as I did last night. Because I'm a glutton for punishment. XB
b. If so, why not?
I can still sort of answer this, though, because I've considered shoving off--as I think we all have. There's the basic tendency of time, which is to make things less exciting, then there's the basic tendency of humans, which is to wank. Fortunately I've been lucky enough to get past/over/around both.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
I started as a sweet lil R/Hr, got really annoyed by the self-righteous craptitude of a lot of R/Hrs that I was around, but got nothin out of H/Hr either, so became R/Hr/H. lol. EVERYONE WINS! Out of that I got a severe, wet love for Harry/Ron.
And basically, that's where I've stayed. I've been challenged to write other ships, and read recs when given by trusted friends regardless of ship, but when I feel the need, I head to one of those three ships.
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?
a. Boredom
b. New interests
c. Lack of time
d. The negative tone directed at H/H within the fandom
e. Any combination of the above
Actually D applies, as stated above. It's why I jumped the 'good' ship.
Also, I've had to scale back involvement considerably a few times due to C. I've rarely been drawn to other fandoms, and when I've explored it's been 5 to 100 :: draw of other things to draw of HP.
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
No idea. My involvement in fandom is my f'list, on which I skip shipping talk, and
Then again, I never thought there was a reason to get panties twisted, so clearly it's not really about logic. I'm interested to see other people's answers, however. You're going to share this with those not lucky enough to be able to go to your thing-o, right?
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I... don't know what IoD is. >.> I've dismissed the epilogue in fandom. I acknowledge its existence as put forth by JKR, yes, but don't care. That's probably the best way to put it. She gave us a great place to play, then tried to destroy it. Dumb move. Dismissed.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
I still ship Trio, which def contains H/Hr. So technically, that's fanon. But you know what? Fanon, in this context, is way better than canon. So in the one that's important to me, the element is present and loved.
WHEE. That was fun. More please! XP
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-09 07:48 pm (UTC)That was my primary ship. I also kinda shipped Fleur/Bill and Tonks/Lupin but they were really really far away. Oh I also think one of the rare things JKR did right in the end is the Snape/Lily ship. It's the only canon ship I like now.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
a. If so, why?
b. If so, why not?
Nope. Because I realized HP wasn't what I thought it was. I thought JKR had crafted everything thoughtfully, I thought there was subtext and myth and creativity. But instead it was only someone who tried putting up something which would please the majority of her readers and always going the easy route. And that's not just the H/Hr ship, it's all the characters and the cheap resolutions... (she didn't have to make the Lupin/Tonks story to end that way, Voldemort revealed himself to be pitiful and a caricature of himself, Harry started acting like a prat and everyone loved it, Bicth!Ginny is supposed to be a role model, Hermione changing into something just to make a ship work, and I could go on and on with that...)
4. If you left the fandom, what was the primary reason for leaving?

Woops, already kinda answered that question, didn't I? I think it's a combination of new interests, lack of time, boredom and just realizing I just didn't get the writer's intent like I thought I would. I still think Alfonso Cuaron should have written the last two books. :P
5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I think it decreased probably because lots of people left the fandom now it's all said and done.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I haven't read H/Hr fanfics in a long while but I guess that since I'm a canon Nazi I'd have to go with the affair!H/Hr fics which explains why I haven't read some in awhile since it goes against what the characters are supposedly all about...
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
I think there are still key moments between them in canon (and the gorgeous Movie!POA) but again, canon Nazi, so they're fanon now... So I guess I no longer really ship them... I didn't even blink at those latest pics of Movie!HBP...

5. Do you believe the negative tone toward the H/H ship in fandom has stayed constant, increased or decreased in the last year?
I avoided all that stuff, for the most part.
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
Trying to get a fic finished. What epilogue? I'm in my own world.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
I see and ship H/Hr everywhere, even not being involved much.

Date: 2008-07-10 06:11 pm (UTC)H/Hr is still my het ship of preference. However, I moved into slash land a long while back, so I haven't been an "active" H/Hr fan in about three years.
2. Are you still involved in fandom?
Yes.
a. If so, why?
I make my own happiness in fandom. It's not like all the stories have been told, not really.
3. If you remained in fandom, have you gravitated to other focuses or other ships, and if so, why?
Yes, I have, because I was bitten hard by the slash bug and also because the H/Hr "ship" didn't develop in ways that held my attention. When I began to move away, the fandom interacted on the FictionAlley H/Hr ship thread, and FA had started making rules against fic being on the thread and against the rules. H/Hr ceased being "one-stop shopping" for me. Wisely or unwisely, the ship attempted to move to web sites, as opposed to LiveJournal communities, and it was too easy for me to lose track of the ship when it spread out the way it did.
Decreased in the last year, but it certainly had its highs and lows. When I drifted away from H/Hr, the "Hermione with Ron or Harry" debate was still very up in the air in canon, and, therefore, more friendly than not. I was shocked by the actions of both ships (R/Hr, H/Hr) after HBP. Still, I've never denied being a Pumpkin Pie-er, although I have denied being a Harmonian. ;)
6. If you do still participate in fandom, do you read or write H/H fanfic? If so, do you read and/or write H/H from the standpoint of pre or post-epilogue, affair!H/Hr, Epilogue-what-epilogue, do you ignore HBP/DH/the IoD completely, etc.?
I skim the occasional H/Hr, and will write H/Hr drabbles on rare occasions. I enjoy H/Hr subplots in other fics. I never did feel comfortable writing H/Hr at length, although I did write one (decent?) Trio romance.
I definitely ignore the Epilogue in general, and I can go either way on the book canon. I probably prefer old-school H/Hr stories (pre-HBP or written without HBP, etc. in mind) just because I dislike the very (pat, lame) idea of OBHWF. I don't mind break-ups, dislike divorce and hate cheating/affairs with the firey passion of a thousand suns.
7. Do you still ship H/H in fanon, canon or both?
Both, definitely. I still think Ron is a huge mistake for a woman like Hermione, and that Harry's temperament and sweet nature (once the capslock passes) are still endearing. I'm not a fan of cross-gen, so I see very few "developed character" choices for Hermione to begin with.
All hail the HRMS Pumpkin Pie!

Date: 2008-07-10 11:05 pm (UTC)2. To some extent - definitely not as much as I used to be. I've gotten very involved in other fandoms, and in the past few months, I haven't time for much of anything fandom related - and the next few months are going to wreak havoc even more on my down-time.
3. I haven't really gravitated towards other focuses within the HP fandom, or other ships - I don't think I could ship anyone other than Harry/Hermione if I tried.
4. While I did not leave the fandom, new interests and lack of time are the reasons I'm not as involved as I used to be.
5. I think that it's decreased since the whole post-HBP fiasco. I personally haven't seen any major negativity geared towards H/Hr shippers lately - I think the fact that a lot of people, no matter who they ship, hated the epilogue, is part of the reason for this.
6. I read H/Hr fics occasionally, and they're almost always EWE, or AU (I just like AU fics in general). I find myself writing a lot of affair!fics, or EWE - I did like DH, so I try to include the rest of canon in what I write, but I can't stand the epilogue, so I usually ignore it.
7. Both.
