I got quite a scare tonight...thought I would share for lulz.
We have our fair share of creeps and such - known child molesters, public masturbators, etc. - every public library does.
Here, we've been waiting to evict one of our well-known Chesters who in his free time enjoys drinking the urine of young boys. He likes to wait in public restrooms and request they fill a cup for him. Gross. He's been arrested, charged, convicted, sentenced, imprisoned, paroled and released several times. The guy makes no bones about the fact that he will never be rehabilitated, doesn't worry about being caught again, and generally thumbs his nose at the law.
Finally, we got approval from our lawyers and the city prosecutor to permanently ban him from the library. Strangely, no one took issue with this, and I didn't make any fuss because frankly, having him gone makes everyone's lives easier.
He was asked to come to a Board of Trustees meeting, so he could be served with papers and kicked out.
I was making copies in the adminstration side of the building...which is off to one side of a long, dark hall, no other staff on this side of the building...
When I turned around, he was standing RIGHT behind me! Ahhhh!
After a second or two I was able to speak to him in a normal tone of voice, escort him back out to the waiting area, and hoof it like mad back to circulation.
It was kind of like seeing a snake - you're afraid for a second, then you realize that, like your mom always told you, they're more afraid of you than you are of them.

Date: 2007-11-21 04:42 am (UTC)How are you going to enforce the ban on this guy?

Date: 2007-11-21 06:02 am (UTC)That's what set our eviction in motion, the chance that this guy might proposition a kid in our building, and with his record (and the fact that his picture is posted all over our staff areas - oh man, he was standing less than a foot from one of his mug shots back there!), we could end up being liable.
We had the lawyer (we get counsel from the Attorney General's office) draw up papers formally evicting him from both of our branches, permanently. Sort of like a restraining order, I guess. If he comes onto the property, he'll be trespassing, and arrested.

Date: 2007-11-21 05:07 am (UTC)The creepiest I had to deal with when I worked the library was one of my co-workers having a semi-stalker for a while (it got to the point where she had to stay in the back room until he would leave; our supervisors wouldn't let her walk to her car alone either)... but as creepy as that dude was, it seems to pale in comparison to this douche. *shudders*

Date: 2007-11-21 06:07 am (UTC)We have TONS of them, really, from Chesters to the mentally ill, to old people who are practically homeless, to people who drop their kids off in the summers to spend the entire day here. Recipe for disaster. You quickly learn when to call the cops and how to do a suspect description form!

Date: 2007-11-22 05:02 am (UTC)Oh yeah, same here, except not just summers. My library was right next to an apartment complex with a lot of kids/teens who all show up there the moment they get off the bus. I worked the 3-9 shift. *headdesk* Very effective birth control, for damn sure.
Then of course you have the lovely folks who use the book drop - and/or whatever book they're sticking down it - as a garbage/food/condom receptacle. I don't miss having to deal with that. ;)

Date: 2007-11-21 06:48 am (UTC)Though the nastiest thing I ever had to deal with cleaning up the restroom - there were times when it was really gross. (Especially the men's restroom - which after a while lead us to putting the Playboys and other assorted magazines for sale behind the counter. I'm sure you can deduce why. *shudders*)
Ugh. I'm glad you're okay - I can imagine that must have been creepy.

Date: 2007-11-21 01:33 pm (UTC)Why are these guys not put behind some sort of walled in environment? If not for the protection of society, for their own protection?
I just don't get it. Well, I do - I wrote a story that was a teal deer, but I deleted it. I'll rewrite if you want it.
My other question is this: From what planet does this man hail that he does not get sick from drinking urine?

Date: 2007-12-01 10:46 pm (UTC)In Ohio, they are trying to push through a law that would require bright GREEN license plates for any registered sex offenders. I'm *sure* that won't cause any trouble. *headdesk*
I think, because he's drinking kids' urine, it's okay? I really haven't thought about it, for obvious reasons. >.O
