Has anyone had a successful experience with weight-loss-related hair loss?

I've started losing weight again, and my hair is coming out in frightening amounts.  I use decent hair care products (Body Shop olive oil glossing stuff) and I don't use curling irons or flatteners.

Maybe I shouldn't worry about it; my hair has grown in thicker over the last year or so and if I have to go lighter to counteract the re-thinning, then that's that.  I just don't like the idea of being so thin that I can't pull it back - like it was two years ago.

I need to go shopping, too.  Meeble.

Am considering doing something a la [livejournal.com profile] thaliachaunacy this weekend - maybe I'll pierce the little part of my middle ear.  Can't do the tongue thing anymore - too much risk of infection.  Boo.

Whatever happens, I will be doing the following this weekend:
1.  PT (with cute therapist!)
2.  Seeing Grindhouse with my BFF Missy
3.  Working (BOO!)
4.  Having sushi with [livejournal.com profile] rlanto and her mom
5.  Cleaning (double BOO!)

Just watched the Tad segment on Colbert - those pillowy lips!  *sigh*  I hope my hormones ebb soon, I'm having too much of the boy-crazy lately.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!  *z00ms away*

I went through two periods where my hair fell out something awful - it's usually tied to your protein intake being too low, FYI - but it's definitely grown back. I had ridiculously thick hair to begin with, so I was lucky in that my hair loss wasn't noticable to anyone but me, my colorist and my stylist, but it definitely bothered me to see the clumps of hair coming out. Now I still have little wispy regrowth that's only a few inches long, so much shorter than the rest of my hair - but the ones that you can really see are just the ones surrounding my face.

I don't know if that helps any - I don't think there's much you can do beyond upping your protein (although if it's falling out now, that means your protein was too low 2-3 months ago) and just waiting it out.

That makes a lot of sense, as I cut my protein down starting at the beginning of the year (I was under the impression that I needed to keep eating more protein than normal). I am sticking to the RDA for protein now, so hopefully this is just a phase.

My hair has been so slow to recover that I'm loathe to lose any of it.

I'm not sure how you're losing weight, but sudden rapid weight loss (usually--but not always--associated with gastric bypass, or fad diets) will cause hair loss. It's caused by too few nutrients. A good multi-vitamin may be able to help. Or an iron suppliment. Or more protein. (It depends on what you're not getting enough of, as all will cause hair loss.)

You might want to google hair loss and weight loss and see what comes up. The stories I've heard are from patients, but maybe a doctor has written something.

My hair is just starting to grow back from my recent experience with weight loss related hair loss. IF you look at my most recent photo I posted yesterday, you can see all this baby hair sticking straight up on my head. LOL

My doctor says, protein, protein and more protein. There are a few ver the counter things you can try also. I bought some stuff at the local health food store that worked pretty good. It was expensive, but I think it was worth it. I can get the name of it if you like. Mostly though, I would try to up the protein first and see if that can help.
