Been doing this new medicine for a little over a week now, and I'm .
It has greatly illuminated the way my stomach has adapted to being an open system since the gastrectomy. The logical thing is that I eat, and quite a bit of food moves, undigested, into my small intestine, either through gravity or washing (I have no duodenum, the valve that controls when food moves from the stomach to the small intestine). So when the bile/bilirubin finds undigested escapees, they evict them back the way they came...often throwing them out hard enough to create interesting patterns on the bathroom wall.
As you might imagine, I don't eat a whole lot of red meat or dairy. Or onions. Or bacon, broccoli, or carrots. Ick.
Remember that your mom would yell at you about spoiling your dinner by "filling up" on water or drinking a glass of water would fill you up and you'd eat less? WRONG. OH SO WRONG. Eat dinner without drinking anything, and you'll see what I mean.
This new medicine (Simlyn) works by retarding the emptying of the stomach, probably by slowing contractions (I haven't read the pharm info, just glanced at the stereochem). It's awesome. When I eat, it's like there's a kill switch at the full level. I've missed the cutoff a couple of times - by not taking the stuff 30 minutes ahead of time - and OW. But none of the predicted projectile vomiting, just that horrible, over-full feeling.
So, it's working in several ways - by retarding "post-prandial hyperglycemia" (the spike in blood sugar you get when you eat) and controlling the amount of food that can be consumed comfortably. That means less insulin all around, and the potential for better control. I need to work on my habit of eating simple carbs in lieu of real food (carbs are very easy to digest) and find my damn glucose meter and I'll be on my way.
I had a great dream the other night. I was hanging out with Amy Sedaris, and we were talking about messy lives. I like mine - my house is rarely spit-shined, dog and cat hair regularly take over, and I don't worry about buying a house "while the market is hot". In fact, I don't care if we ever buy a house. (It'll be a condo if we do, anyway. We both detest yard work.) We had this very deep conversation about it, and I remember feeling very happy. Nice!
ALSO. SHAMELESS REQUEST. The group Texas. It seems to be tough to get their stuff 'round these parts. I have The Hush, but that's it. Anyone wanna hook a sista up with more stuff via YSI/Megaupload? I'm always willing to do a trade, hit me up (I have tons o' stuff).
