Have been climbing back on the good health bandwagon. I have my gym membership and have been working out 2-3 times a week since the beginning of April. Yay me! Have only lost inches, but I'm nearly back to 100% of my former strength training. I have absolutely no wiggle in my upper arms - :-D I don't even mind the ab crunches or the glute machine (actually, the glute machine is my least enjoyable, as my ass as really never gotten the attention it deserves, and it protests by aching all day long).

Have been slowly but steadily making the climb back to eating right and taking my insulin and meds as well. It is a pain in the rear to take 3-5 shots a day (I have to take 2 in the morning, since I take 3 different types of insulin and one can't be mixed), test blood sugar 3-5 times a day, and worry that every little thing you put in your mouth is going to make you a porker. I've gained 2 pounds in the last week, even with all of the cardio I've been doing (20 minutes on the stairmaster and 30 on the bike, shooting for 400+ calories per workout).

I'll have to start eating pickles and olives as meals if this keeps up. This I can handle.

It's frelling expensive. I get some stuff free (needles, lancets, and test strips - thank God my employer offers an HMO), but man, I could do without:

Lantus (which is an oil-based, 24-hour time release insulin, of which I use 2-3 vials a month) - $20 per vial
70/30 Insulin (2-3 of these every month) - $10 per vial
Humalog (fast-acting insulin which is taken before/after meals or when my sugar levels are high; 2 per month) - $10 per vial
The Pill (although I've not been taking it recently, I thought I ought to get back into the swing of it anyway) - $28 per month

I'm utterly broke until the end of the month because of this, and I don't think I'm going to be able to restock once this stuff runs out (once the Lantus is gone, I'll supplement with the other stuff until it runs out too). Woe.

And I've discovered that I know as much about blow jobs as the so-called experts. I am waiting for [livejournal.com profile] queerasjohn's seminar at Nimbus, where I feel I will find out if this is really true, or if I could use more practice (I don't have as articulate a Honeybunch as [livejournal.com profile] infinitus). We shall see.

Oh dear...!

I've got a couple of ideas:

1) Maybe your doctor has samples he or she could give you? Not v. likely for insulin, I know, but it's worth a try.

2) I'd check and see if there's a sliding-fee pharmacy in your area. If you're in the US, there are community-based medical centres as in my town here in the US that provide medical services to those in emergency situations like yours.

Also, don't worry about the weight loss if you're working out. If your fat is turning to muscle, you may not lose that much weight depending on what you weigh now, but you will be in much better shape! Congrats on doing the programme!

Hang in there...!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, since I have health insurance, I do not qualify for any community-based help. And I absolutely refuse to have a strange doctor examine me so I can get the Pill for $15. I can beg and get a pack from my regular gyno, if it comes to that.

*sigh* At my club they have an article up that says that the initial weight gain that was once thought to be due to muscle is actually fat gain. But I'll never believe it!!! :D Once I get back into shape, I'll be better able to lose the weight. That's what counts.

Go you with the workouts. And don't believe that crap about the weight gain being fat. They're probably talking about guys who try to bulk up and eat like pigs. Naturally not all of that weight will be lean muscle. Besides, it's the inches that count, not the pounds.

*hugs*

Keep up the workouts. :-)

My dad had diabetes and so I'm at risk for it, too. I have to watch my sugar intake and cut out the bad fats. I try to use monosaturated fats like olive oil and stay away fron the polysaturated stuff like margarine, etc. My doctor recommended the Zone diet and I've been on it for a year now; lost 20 lbs on it, too. It limits fats and concentrates on lean proteins and veggies and fruits with some whole grain products.
