Too soon posting that rant meme, methinks...

Company fires all employees who smoke

What next?  Taking blood samples to screen for possible genetic diseases to cut down on health insurance costs? Oh, wait, never mind.  :P

And, you know, to some of those in red states, health care is a privilege, not a right.

Oh. Em. Eff. Gee. Y'know, it's one thing entirely if they don't hire someone because they smoke, and that's stated up front. It's another thing if they fire someone for refusing to take a test. What if the best employees they've ever had are smokers? I highly doubt it effects their work. Even if it is a health-care firm, I'd think that people would be decently discreet about it. And what if good employees who are nonsmokers refuse on principle? Just... just... AGH. I mean, I smoke, and I know how bad it is, and I'm really closeted about it half the time, but good lord, it doesn't make me a bad employee or a bad person or a bad anything. It's one thing if you fire someone because they're going out for smoke breaks every ten minutes, because that does interfere. But if someone's smoking outside the office on their own time? No way. Nobody has any right to do this till the Feds make smoking illegal. GAH.

In the past few years there has really been a crackdown on smoke breaks and the like...but it's not what they're cracking down on! blerghajjkgh

First, it's smoking. Then, recreational alcohol use. What's next, obesity? None of these things are illegal, and no company should be able to regulate what people do in their off-time, so long as it doesn't affect their work. Ooh, what about sleep-deprivation? A company could start to require all their employees to sleep 8 hours a night, or face disciplinary action! It's a slippery slope, I'm telling ya! :P

That's a pretty shitty move, imho, but you've got to admit that having a genetic disease isn't the same as choosing to smoke. Legally, a huge difference.

Point conceded. But, smoking isn't illegal, just unhealthy. First smoking, then alcohol use, THEN obesity - I can hear the dominos beginning to tumble...
