Hey! An arbitrary new year!
Jan. 1st, 2005 11:21 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Well, good morning, 2005! Here's hoping that this year will be better for all of you, because goodness knows for some of us it couldn't get much worse.
Resolutions? Not many, although I did come to a conclusion about my current job last night.
I am going to try and stick this job out until the next levy. If it passes, at least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (i.e. the construction of the Far North Library and hopefully, my chance at a position that better fits my vision of library service). If it fails, I'll immediately start a job search.
I am not qualified to deal with the crap I've had to deal with - ADA regulations being stretched to cover the library's ass while the person can't perform any job duties; being railroaded into hiring people with disabilities and left to train them on my own (I certainly have some experience, but by no means am I an expert on autism or epilepsy). Of course I am also expected (and to them, rightly so) to give all of my 'regular' employees equal time. My cries for help have been met with 'you just need to work harder/spend more time with them'. Grrr.
I work hard - I rarely sit down, and you will never see me surfing the internet. We are all scrambling to get twice the work done with half the people, and next year there will be even fewer people with more to do.
God, it's depressing. And that needs to change.
The things I typically focus on at the new year are year-end reports and getting things started post-holiday. Not much time for reflection or regret.
Fandom-wise, I am going to concentrate on my writer's block and try to post up some thoughts here without being a complete and total wanker. Any advice from the peanut gallery?
And now that it's over,
The End-of-Year Meme
1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before? Had surgery
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't make resolutions, really. I remind myself of my short and long-term goals at regular intervals.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? God, yes. My niece, one of my friends, my sister in law. I think that's it, geez.
4. Did anyone close to you die? No, thank goodness.
5. What countries did you visit? Didn't visit anywhere new this year, physically. Morphine does crazy stuff to your brain, though.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004? Better health, a more satisfying job, and an end to writer's block.
7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? November 6, for obvious reasons!
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Making it through my wedding and not attempting to kill anyone in my family.
9. What was your biggest failure? Not being a superwoman at work. Mental stress does take its toll.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Uh, yeah.
11. What was the best thing you bought? Bought? Hm...my wedding dress, I think.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Andy's. He always pulls through and keeps me upbeat when the chips are way down. And he's learned to sleep in those uncomfortable hospital waiting room chairs.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? My dad's. My brother's. I never thought I'd come to a point where estranged would come to describe my relationship with any of my family members. *sad*
14. Where did most of your money go? Straight to the hospital. Insurance is great until you really need it. :-|
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? PoA movie, HBP announcement.
16. What song will always remind you of 2004? Ooh, that stupid Maroon 5 song..."She Will Be Loved"
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? -- Sadder
ii. thinner or fatter? -- Much, much thinner :(
iii. richer or poorer? -- Much, much poorer
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Talking to my dad, because now I could really live the rest of my life without doing it again.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Lying on my back staring at the ceiling.
20. How did you spend Christmas? Spent it with Andy's family in Coshocton.
21. How did you spend New Years? Went to lunch and the North Market with some of the
hp_ohio gang. :D
22. Did you fall in love in 2004? Don't we all? I meet people I fall in love with all the time.
23. How many one-night stands? Er. I guess it only counts if you don't see the person again...the mystique is lost when you go into the kitchen and see your one-nighter in the sweatpants you bought him five years ago. :)
24. What was your favorite TV program? I don't watch enough TV to answer this question. I'm a big fan of the I Love the ___'s shows on VH1.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Yes, and I'm not going to tell you who they are. :>
26. What was the best book you read? Ooh. I'd have to say, Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Burning Brides, Dresden Dolls.
28. What did you want and get? Married, finally.
29. What did you want and not get? An IPod. *sniffle*
30. What was your favorite film of this year? I think PoA was it, actually. Sometimes movies are all about who you see them with.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I'm 29, and I spent it at work.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Winning the lottery.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004? Comfortable for work, athletic at home. Vive Adidas!
34. What kept you sane? Andy, my friends. All of you.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I'm not much for celebrity worship (I'm just as fleeting and fickle as they are), but I'm always a sucker for Johnny Depp, because your first crush is the best.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? The extremist christian movement toward regulating morality.
37. Who did you miss? My mom, at times.
38. Who was the best new person you met? I met so many new people in 2004, with
ladybug_rjc being the newest.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004: That no matter what happens in life, if you don't have your health, you have nothing.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: How about a quote? "People are always angry at anyone who chooses very individual standards for his life; because of the extraordinary treatment which that grants to himself, they feel degraded, like ordinary beings." -F. Nietzsche

I think the tsunami has truly hit home here, too. By far the worst reports are the interviews with people who say, "I wish I'd died too; I have nothing." There is a limit to how much a person can lose before they want to give up completely. In comparison, I am immeasurably lucky.
