Just 'Cause It's Annoying...
May. 13th, 2004 01:01 amI can't wait to get our new Integrated Library System. The newest technology allows for pictures to be taken at library terminals, for patron identification and such.
Also, for posting up Stupid Patron of the Week fliers.
Dear Stupid Patron (SP),
If you are going to cut out photographs of artwork to use in a project, it would be to your advantage to only cut up one of the many expensive art books you borrowed from the library. That way, should you be accused of cutting up library material, you could lie and claim, "it was like that when I checked it out," the way most library patrons do when they don't want to own up to destroying/damaging library property. Cutting up half a dozen books in your possession then returning them all at the same time guarantees you will have a very nasty letter sent to your house and charges of more than $200 added to your account.
It is also in your best interest that if you do not want to be caught defacing library materials, you refrain from cutting up more than a third of the book. Yes, we can tell that pages are askew if there is that much damage to contents. You also might want to think twice before cutting the photos from the page edges. Taking them from the center of the book would reduce your chances of being fingered as a defacer of property.
But, SP, you didn't think before you cut, did you? And that, my dear, is going to cost you a damn sight more than those color copies from Kinko's would have.
Sincerely,
PBG

WTF is with people?!
They probably won't pay the fine, either, will they...

It's so nice to see people actually outraged by this. In one library I worked at, we kept all the art books (and Playboys and Playgirls) in "the cage" and if you wanted them, you had to ask for them specially. This was because of the vandalism done to the books and magazines.
Sheesh. ;->

Date: 2004-05-13 04:25 pm (UTC)If she doesn't pay, she'll not be using the library for a looooooong time.
Sad thing is, these were not obscure, she could have easily found them on the internet or made color copies of them. *shakes head*

That about the dog training manuals is funny though

Date: 2004-05-13 07:05 pm (UTC)Okay, putting aside all the usual horrors of ripping up a book that is from a library (hey, idiot - are fooking TAX DOLLARS meaningful to you at least?)
I am just stunned that someone is that stoopid. Shouldn't there be some sort of award for being that god-damn stupid?
Really. I mean it. That is just jaw-clenchingly dumb. Did they think they would get away with it?
*shakes head*
All the books they signed out. Multiple pictures ripped out.
Duh.
These people are not what you would call 'bright', are they?

Date: 2004-05-14 12:28 pm (UTC)I honestly think this girl checked these books out, cut them up for a project, then returned them thinking we'd never notice.
I'd hate to think she's done it before, but I bet she has, and it's not been caught right away (i.e. before it was checked in). This time she was caught by her own greedy negligence.
*laughs at self*
Date: 2004-05-14 12:37 pm (UTC)For some reason, I assumed that 'she' was a 'he'. I just figured that a female would never be that stupid.
Ah, yes. Note to self: Examine own attitudes occasionally.
That is incredible, really.
