ALL HAIL THE DOMESTIC GODDESS!
Dec. 21st, 2003 02:51 amWoo, Christmas baking out of the way. Made an obscene amount of fudge which I am not going to eat quit calling to me I'll take over to my sister's house tomorrow. Most of the local family will be coming over for our Christmas celebration. It saves the kids having to travel all over God's muddy earth on Christmas Day and with all the blending of families and such, it makes sense.
Also, made latkes. I love potato pancakes so much I want to marry them and have their little kugel babies. *munches*
Went to try on The Dress. Yeah, that's really the price. It looked okay on, but the dress wasn't comfortable. And since I'm a washed-up Rainbow Girl, I know I have to be comfy or it's no go.
This one made me look like a beached whale for some reason.
Tried on this dress, which I liked. I don't go nicely in at the waist, but it looked great on, no fuss, no muss. The train is detachable and looks great.
But the best one - you know you've found The One when you come out and everyone in the vicinity comments on how nice it looks - was this one, which was gorgeous and fit me perfectly although it's strapless. There will be much "contour shaping" up top so the dress won't slip down to my knees when I raise my glass to toast. :D Kidding - it looked much better than I thought it would, since I've never even tried on a strapless gown before (again with the Rainbow thing). The dress would look awesome with the overlay from the first dress; the accents are the same color. I wonder if I could find that lace somewhere and make a jacket for myself.
This was the first official trip to find The Dress. Will have to do some more online shopping.
And we have to cancel our old registry at Target (we'd originally planned a wedding for October 2003 but when Andy was laid off we decided to wait a year) and make up a new one. Registries are a pain in the butt and this time I'll try to do as much of it online as possible.
My sister and I also took the opportunity to clean our bank accounts of extra money. She finished her Christmas shopping (mainly by finishing up her harassment of the SportMart salesmen by making her fourth trip to the golf department and demanding they give her the clubs she wanted for less than $200) and the two of us began a buying frenzy for our possibly-married (my SIL hasn't heard from Stevie as yet) niece. She needs everything, so we hit Target, Dollar General and Lazarus and bought her all manner of stuff. That girl is hooked up! The first thing she needs is a fire extinguisher and instructions to put out a grease fire, 'cause that girl can't cook. :D
Details are trickling in. Her husband is leaving for the Middle East (!) early in the New Year, thus their motivation for getting married - he wanted her to be taken care of. I hope that's it and not the pitter-patter of little feet. *grimace* But what's done is done and we're behind her 100% as always.
It's 2:50 am. It's gonna be a long day today. *snores*

Date: 2003-12-21 12:50 pm (UTC)My dress was about $1200, but that's custom-made from a photo, including lots of details we had to work out, three-layer veil, and an extra-poufy custom-made crinoline because the fabric for the skirt was so heavy. It's crazy how expensive weddings are, isn't it! :S
And a warning about Target's registry (unless there's been a miracle and they've changed how it works in the last year and a half): Keep close tabs on it. Those minimum-wage clerks must throw out the information that items were purchased -- I had to go in there after both my showers to exchange and fix things... and I STILL wound up taking back two extra, HEAVY sets of TV trays, two different crockpots (neither of which was the one I'd registered for), a mixer, and like a half-dozen meat thermometers or something. None of which showed as having been purchased... o_O

Date: 2003-12-21 03:50 pm (UTC)I think the way they do the clean-up registry stuff is stupid. You ought to be able to have the cashier scan the registry barcode first, then anything that matches on your transaction will be entered into the database as purchased for that registry. Giving the cashier a sheet of paper with the items circled and expecting them to do it "during their free time" *snerk* is silly. I really don't want six meat thermometers. :-P

Date: 2003-12-21 04:45 pm (UTC)I had a hard enough time registering at Target in the first place, and the only reason I did was to give my friends who didn't have a lot of money some options for things. Tools, kitchen gadgets, a card table & chairs, etc. The stuff I really wanted was at Gottschalks (a CA dept store like Macy's). And almost EVERYONE got me something from there... with the exception of my parents' bridge group friends, who all got me a place setting of my stoneware, since that's always what my mother selected for a wedding present for THEIR child's wedding.
But it's all a lot of fun to remember, even all the meat thermometers (the brand name of which is my last name, so I think people thought "oh, how funny and appropriate.")

Date: 2003-12-21 04:53 pm (UTC)I like *all* the dresses! *grins*
I got married in a silvery silk tankdress that I'd bought for $20.00 on the clearance rack of some boutique. I'd originally bought it to wear for some goth night or other, but when the time came, figured it would make a nice dress. And I did look rather nice, at that.
Now, however, having had one marriage under my belt, if I ever do it again, I want THE DRESS -- the veil, the headpiece, the whole nine. I want the dream wedding.

Date: 2003-12-22 10:54 am (UTC)But of course my mom made a big deal out of the fact that I didn't want white for my wedding dress. "But what will everyone think?!" she asked, and I told her they'd say, "Thank goodness she didn't wear white, it makes her look awful!" :-P

I loved the first one. Think its gorgeous and classy and has that elegant feel to it.
And you are right, there is something about the power of the dress.
Mine (remember married 15 years ago) was ultra traditional, but the train had butterfly cutouts through it and I adored that little feature. It was extremely fitted through the bodice, so for the first and last time in my life, I had cleavage!
*Cackles*
