[Error: unknown template qotd]I don't have truly emotional reactions to the deaths of celebrities - it's not like I knew them, or anything.  I feel more for their families.  It's sad to think, even on the list above, how many of those folks had small children who will never know them as adults.

Political killings affect me deeply, though - because they are, by and large, assassinations of ideology.

I remember clearly when Reagan was shot...I actually watched it on the noon news with my mom, right after I'd gotten home from school (kindergarten, I'm assuming).  It was very shocking to me, that someone would want to kill the president (even if I didn't like him, I was a Carter supporter - I came out of the womb with political leanings) and that all those security men couldn't protect him.

The biggest tragic celeb death I remember is Princess Di; I'm too young to remember most of the others. I was up late waiting for my Star Trek: TNG rerun and when the news broke in, I remember going "WTF is this, where is my show?!" Until the word came in that Diana had died, after which point I felt guilty. I remember watching parts of her procession/funeral and being sad, but mostly because she'd clearly touched so many lives - and of course for William and Harry. My mom was more affected than me; she all but worshiped Diana.

I've never witnessed a presidential assassination, and I pray I don't. (The Murrah bombing and 9/11 were more than enough, thanks.) It terrifies me to think of something like that happening to Obama, and you know there are a lot of crazy shitheads out there raring to pull something like that.
