Of Food And Shopping And Other Things
Jul. 31st, 2005 04:46 pmWell, dang. Another locally-owned restaurant bites the dust. *shakes fist at McDonald's-raised idiots*
I think I might suggest Victorian's Midnight Cafe to
redblaze and
tonksnymphadora once they get here. Hee! So excited...
I have found new crack. My horoscope said not to overspend; I think I should heed the cosmos on this one. *must resist*
But, good news (sorta) - my problem employee finally submitted her resignation.
All evidence to the contrary, I hate being the bad guy. Unfortunately, the ability to be impartial and to control my emotions in favor of fairness makes me the fall guy 99% of the time.
That being said, I don't feel bad at all that this lady is going. She's been going back and forth with aggressive behavior, and she is just not able to work at an acceptable level. If we were a small-town library with low-level statistics (you know, sleepy, quiet little library with the desk clerk doing circulation, reference questions and readers' advisory all at one desk), she could work here. But we'll probably hit 1.2 MILLION check-outs (yup, that's just what we process going out, not coming in - like returns and reserves - from our department), and she can't keep the pace.
Other problem? She's a LIAR. Grrr! She sent this scathing email to the director, saying that she had been "forced" to resign, that she had never been told what the standards were that she needed to meet, and that she'd asked/applied for other positions and had been told no.
Well, she wrote and signed her own resignation without coercion from anyone. The standards that I use for every employee I supervise has been included in each of the SEVEN evaluations she's had in the past 18 months. And no one has ever seen an internal application from her, ever.
And, she's been going around to all the public service desks and telling the staff there those things. LIAR! >:O
She claims she has a lot of trouble with her memory because of her epilepsy, but what she does remember always seems to paint her in the light of the abused party. I'm so mean beacause I don't let her "work at her own pace" and don't let her get away with verbally abusing the staff/spreading rumors. -.-
One great thing (and this is the not-nice part of me having a field day) that probably mitigated this more than anything else was our mandatory ADA-awareness training. This employee attended a session with most of our administrative staff, including the director, HR director, director of public services, and facilities director. These folks (with the exception of the HR director), until that day, had been very laissez-faire about this woman. After she pretty much dominated FIFTEEN minutes of the meeting with horrible, disjointed rambling, we had a flurry of email and lawyers swooping in to FINALLY analyze the paperwork. Sometimes, you have to experience what someone has to put up with every single day before you realize there is a serious problem, I guess. -.-
Her personnel file fills a 2 1/2 inch binder, and I don't have 100% of the file. She tried to take back her resignation, too. (Thank goodness for personnel/HR rules forbidding that)
I have to throw a "farewell" party for her. Everyone seems to appreciate how the "so long, farewell" sentiment works both ways in this situation.
I am SO looking forward to work getting done by the person I plan to hire in her stead.
All of the work, the extra effort, the bald spots, the helpless anger, the ranting and raving, was worth having five employees thank me for finally getting her out, and they appreciated the fact that I did it with such professionalism. Not from the people "above", but peers and my subordinates. There is such a feeling of relief, I think. Now I can concentrate on the things that REALLY matter, like my other, wonderful employees.
I've been seeing it pop up in posts lately but, at the risk of sounding bitchy, Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta.
